LEGO Super Mario 71438 Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi Officially Revealed | October 2024

Our final LEGO SDCC reveal is this year's LEGO Super Mario 18+ D2C of 71438 Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi. The LEGO Super Mario theme has still not produced Minifigures, sticking with the Digfig playsets, but the licensed themes D2Cs bring a range of Mario characters, places and games to life. This includes an 18+ model based on an earlier generation of Super Mario games of Super Mario World.

71438 is based on the world-famous plumber, this time in a 2D form riding the fictional dinosaur character of Yoshi. This was a common occurrence in the Super Mario World game so it's no surprise that LEGO has recreated such an iconic duo in their classic 2D 16-bit form.

The 2D brick-built model is constructed on several levels and equipped with a mechanism and a crank as the main play feature. This enables various motion animations from the Super Mario World game: Yoshi's legs move and the green dinosaur can also stick out his tongue. The entire build of Mario and Yoshi, along with the small 16-bit landscape they navigate, is 33 studs (26 cm) wide and about 49 studs (40 cm) high.

71438 Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi retails for $129.99 / €129.99 / £114.99 with a total of 1,215 pieces included. The display model, being a 2D recreation, can only be displayed from one side with the back showcasing all its hidden features and pieces used for the fun mechanism. LEGO has also included an action tag to make the 18+ set compatible with the LEGO Super Mario digfigs of Mario, Luigi and Peach.
